Hair Salon in Newark, NJ

Lush Atelier is a Brazilian hair salon in Newark, NJ, at 59 Wilson Avenue in the Ironbound, a few minutes from Newark Penn Station. Cuts, color, balayage, highlights, keratin and smoothing treatments and hair extensions are all done in one room by hairstylists who trained on Brazilian hair and have spent years on the range of textures that actually walks through a Newark door.

We work by appointment, Monday to Saturday, so nobody is rushed out of a chair. Consultations are free and unhurried, and we speak English and Portuguese. Parking is on Wilson Avenue and the streets around it.

  • Cuts and styling

A haircut here starts with a conversation and a look at dry hair, before anything is washed. How your hair actually falls, where it splits, how much heat it has taken this year, and — the question that decides most of it — how many minutes you are really willing to give it in the morning. A beautiful cut you cannot reproduce at home is not a beautiful cut.

We cut for women, men and children: long layers, blunt lobs, curtain bangs, fringe, shags, pixies, and the plain, well-shaped trim that keeps length healthy. Curly and coily hair is cut dry and curl by curl, because a curl pattern cut under tension springs back somewhere you did not plan for.

Styling is booked on its own too — a blow-dry, a brushing, a smooth press, soft waves, or an occasion set for a photo shoot, a christening or a night out. Ask for a five-minute lesson on the round brush while you are in the chair; we would rather you left knowing how to repeat it.

  • Textured bronde lob cut and finished at Lush Atelier, Newark
  • Hand-painted balayage finished with a blowout at Lush Atelier in Newark NJ
  • Color, balayage and highlights

Balayage is the request we hear most, and it is the one most often done badly — painted too high, too uniform, or on hair that could not take the lift. Ours is hand-painted with a soft root, so the grow-out is a shadow rather than a line and you can go three or four months between appointments without a stripe across your parting.

We also do foil highlights and babylights when you want brightness with more precision, full colour and root touch-ups for grey coverage, lowlights to put depth back into hair that has gone flat and brassy, and gloss and toning services on their own — a twenty-minute toner between colour appointments does more for how your colour reads than most people expect.

Colour correction is booked as a consultation first, never blind. Box dye, a home bleach that went orange, a black that has to come out: all of that is possible, but it is a plan across sessions, not a single afternoon, and we will tell you honestly what your hair can take and what it cannot. Bond-building products go into every lightening service, and we do a strand test whenever there is any doubt.

  • Caramel highlights on curled hair, coloured at Lush Atelier, Newark
  • Shampoo and scalp treatment at the wash basin at Lush Atelier in Newark NJ
  • Keratin and smoothing treatments

Progressiva, Brazilian keratin, Brazilian blowout, hair botox: the names overlap and the marketing does not help, so here is the plain version. A keratin or smoothing treatment coats and seals the hair shaft to cut frizz and drying time. Hair botox is a deep conditioning and rebuilding treatment — it smooths as a side effect of repairing, and it does not straighten. Which one you want depends on whether your problem is shape or condition.

We will tell you what is in the product before it goes on your head, including whether it releases formaldehyde, and we will point you to a formaldehyde-free option if you are pregnant, nursing, or simply would rather not. Ventilation matters and we treat it that way.

A smoothing treatment typically holds three to five months and fades out rather than growing out in a line. Afterwards, use a sulphate-free shampoo and keep salt water and chlorine off it where you can — a swimming pool will shorten the life of a progressiva faster than anything else. Scalp treatments and deep conditioning are booked on their own for hair that needs repair before it needs anything else.

  • Sleek golden honey blonde finish after a smoothing treatment at Lush Atelier, Newark
  • Long hair with caramel highlights and curled ends styled at Lush Atelier in Newark NJ
  • Hair extensions and mega hair

Mega hair is what our Brazilian clients ask for and hair extensions is what everyone else calls it; either way, Aline fits them. Tape-ins for fine hair that needs to stay comfortable, keratin bonds and micro-links for longer wear, and hand-tied or machine wefts when the goal is thickness through the mid-lengths rather than dramatic added length.

The consultation is the part that decides the result. We match colour in daylight, look at how much of your own hair there is to carry the weight, and set a length that will still look like your hair from the front. Extensions that are too heavy for the head they are on do damage, and we would rather fit fewer and keep your hair.

Maintenance is a move-up every six to ten weeks depending on the method and how fast you grow. Removal is done here, gently, with the right solvent and no scissors near your own hair. Brush with a loop brush, dry the bonds properly, and sleep with it braided — do those three things and a good set outlives its estimate.
