Post-Operative Care

Post-Operative Lymphatic Drainage in Newark, NJ

Lush Atelier is a beauty salon on Wilson Avenue, in the middle of Newark's Ironbound — and post-operative care is the quietest room in it. Elis, our co-founder, is a licensed massage therapist who has spent more than ten years working with people in the weeks after surgery. She is the person you book with and the person you see.

Lymphatic drainage here is not a spa add-on with a softer name. Sessions are scheduled around your surgeon's protocol, performed in a private room, and adjusted week by week as your body changes. We speak English and Portuguese, and we are a short walk from Newark Penn Station.

  • Manual lymphatic drainage performed on the legs at Lush Atelier in Newark NJ
  • What lymphatic drainage does after surgery

Surgery interrupts the lymphatic system. Incisions cut through the fine vessels that normally carry fluid out of the tissue, which is why swelling, tightness and heaviness tend to arrive two or three days after you get home rather than immediately.

Manual lymphatic drainage is light, rhythmic and directional. It is not deep-tissue work and it should not hurt — the pressure is closer to a hand resting on skin than to anything you would recognise from a sports massage. The strokes move fluid toward the lymph nodes that are still working, so your body can clear it through the routes it has left.

Most people notice the difference first in how their compression garment sits by the end of a session. Over a course of sessions the aim is steadier: less trapped fluid, softer tissue, and fewer of the hardened areas known as fibrosis, which are far easier to prevent than to undo. None of this replaces your surgeon's aftercare — it works alongside it.

  • Post-surgical recovery massage

Drainage is the beginning of the work, not the whole of it. As the early swelling settles, sessions shift toward the tissue itself: releasing the tight, board-like areas that form under an incision, softening scar tissue once it has closed and your surgeon has cleared it, and easing the neck, shoulders and lower back that quietly take the strain while you are sleeping propped up on pillows.

We also do the unglamorous parts. Checking that your compression garment is sitting where it should, showing you how to position yourself so one area is not bearing everything, and telling you plainly when something looks like it belongs in your surgeon's office rather than ours.

What should you look for in a post-op massage therapist? Four things. First, a current state massage licence — ask to see it. Second, real post-operative volume: how many post-op clients they see in a week, and which procedures. Third, a willingness to read your surgeon's protocol and follow it, including stopping when it says stop. Fourth, a private room and visible sanitation. And one warning sign: anyone who promises inches lost, guarantees a result, or works hard enough to make you brace against the table is not doing lymphatic drainage.

Who this is for

Most of the people who come to us are recovering from liposuction and lipo 360, abdominoplasty, a Brazilian butt lift, breast augmentation, reduction or lift, or a combination of those as part of a mommy makeover. We also see clients after facial surgery, after orthopaedic procedures, and after gynaecological surgery, where swelling in the legs is often the complaint that lingers longest.

You do not need to have had your surgery in New Jersey. A good share of our clients travelled — to Miami, to the Dominican Republic, or home to Brazil — and landed back in Newark in the middle of recovery, holding discharge papers in a language their local therapist could not read. We can read them.

There are people we should not treat, or not yet. Active infection at the surgical site, a suspected or confirmed blood clot, an open or draining wound, uncontrolled heart or kidney disease, or an untreated cancer diagnosis all mean the answer is your doctor first and us afterwards. If you tell us something that sounds like one of those, we will say so and send you back for clearance. That is not us being difficult; it is the job.

How soon after surgery should you start

How soon after liposuction should I start lymphatic drainage? Most surgeons clear patients to begin somewhere between day two and day seven, and a good number want the first session inside the first 72 hours, while the tissue is still soft and fluid has not had time to organise itself. Some, particularly after a tummy tuck with drains still in place, will ask you to wait until the drains come out. The honest answer is that your surgeon decides and we follow — so bring their instructions to the first visit, or message us a photo of them beforehand and we will tell you whether it is time.

A typical course is frequent at first and then tapers: three to five sessions a week for the first two weeks, dropping to two or three a week, then weekly. Ten to fifteen sessions across four to six weeks is the usual shape of it, though bodies do not read schedules and yours may need more or fewer.

If you are already six weeks out, or three months out, it is not too late. Late-stage work looks different — less fluid to move, more attention to fibrosis and scar tissue — but it is still worth doing, and we would rather see you late than not at all.

Sessions run about an hour. Wear or bring your compression garment, eat something light beforehand, and expect to drink water and use the bathroom more than usual for the rest of the day. That is the fluid leaving, and it is the point.

More on this in the journal: choosing someone you trust for post-operative care.

Lymphatic drainage without surgery

You do not need to have had an operation to book a lymphatic drainage massage. A good share of the people on Elis's table never went near a surgeon — they came in because their legs feel heavy by the afternoon, because they stand or sit for ten hours a day, because a long flight left their ankles swollen, or because of the fluid retention and bloating that arrives on schedule every month. The technique is the same light, rhythmic, directional work; only the reason for it changes.

It is also booked on its own before a wedding, a shoot or a holiday, when the goal is simply to feel less puffy and less heavy in a few days' time. Most people book a single session for that, or a short run of three or four across a fortnight if the swelling is a long-standing habit rather than a one-off.

Two honest limits, because they matter more than the marketing. Lymphatic drainage is not weight loss — it moves fluid, not fat, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. And if you have been diagnosed with lymphedema, that is a medical condition needing complete decongestive therapy from a certified lymphedema therapist; tell us and we will say plainly that it is outside what we do rather than take the booking. The same cautions apply as after surgery: an active infection, a suspected blood clot, uncontrolled heart or kidney disease, or an untreated cancer diagnosis all mean your doctor first. If you are pregnant, bring your doctor's clearance and we will work within it.

Book a post-operative session

The first conversation is a consultation, not a sale. We look at where you are in recovery, read your surgeon's protocol, and give you an honest number of sessions — including zero, if it is too early or if something needs a doctor first.

WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach Elis, and you can send your discharge instructions straight through it. You can also call the studio at (862) 466-2119 during open hours, Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM. We are at 59 Wilson Avenue, Newark, NJ 07105, with parking on Wilson Avenue and the streets around it.
