More women are having cosmetic surgery than at any point before, and the conversation has largely shifted from whether to have it to how to recover well from it.
Recovery is the part that gets less attention and matters enormously.
What post-operative lymphatic drainage is for
After surgery, the body holds fluid. That is normal. Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle technique that supports the body's own process of moving that fluid, which is why so many surgeons recommend it as part of a recovery plan.

It is worth being clear about what it is not. It is not a treatment that replaces your surgeon's instructions, and nobody should promise you a specific outcome. Anyone who does is telling you what you want to hear.
What it can do is support a more comfortable recovery, and it works best alongside what your surgeon has already told you about compression, movement and timing.
Why the person matters more than the technique
This is the part we would want a friend to know.

Post-operative work is done on a body that is healing. The pressure, the timing, the areas worked on and the areas avoided all depend on your specific procedure and how you are actually responding. It is not the same for a tummy tuck as it is for liposuction.
If the sessions hurt, something is wrong. This work should be gentle. If you have been told otherwise, that is not the technique being applied correctly.
You are also going to be seen at your most vulnerable, at a point when you may not recognize your own body yet. That deserves someone who is trained, who explains what they are doing, and who you feel comfortable with.
Ask before you book
A few questions worth asking anyone you are considering:
What is your training in post-operative work specifically, not massage generally? How do you adjust for different procedures? What should I expect a session to feel like? When do you think I should start, and will you coordinate with what my surgeon told me?
Someone who answers those clearly is someone worth trusting.
At Lush Atelier

Elis handles post-operative care here. She is a certified massage therapist with specialized training in post-operative and manual lymphatic drainage work, and she treats recovery as something that happens across weeks rather than in a single appointment.
She will also tell you honestly when something needs your surgeon's attention rather than hers. That is the answer you want from someone working on a body that is healing.
