Bridal Hair and Makeup in Newark, NJ

Five specialists under one roof is the whole argument for getting ready at Lush Atelier. Hair and makeup happen in the same room, on the same morning, without a car ride between them — and with enough hands that a party of six does not turn into a five-hour queue.

We are on Wilson Avenue in Newark's Ironbound, minutes from Penn Station and easy to reach from Harrison, Kearny and East Newark. Book six to eight weeks out for a wedding; three to four for a quinceañera, sweet sixteen or prom.

  • Bridal hair

Every bride starts with a trial, ideally about four weeks before the day. We plan the look properly — a low chignon, a soft romantic updo, a half-up with waves, Hollywood waves worn down, braid work, or something built around a hair accessory you have already fallen for — and we practise the veil and comb placement with the actual piece if you have it, because a comb sits differently in a finished style than anyone expects.

The trial is also where we find out what your hair will really do in June. Fine hair that will not hold, curls that drop by the reception, a fringe that has opinions about humidity: all of that is solvable, but only if we have met it once before the morning of the wedding. Come to the trial with clean, dry, day-old hair and, if you can, bring a photo of the dress neckline.

On the day we style the bride last, so it is the freshest thing in the room, and we send you out with pins, a small can of spray and instructions for the one person in your party who will be fixing things at the reception.

  • Bridal makeup

Bridal makeup is built to last fourteen hours and to photograph well under three different kinds of light — daylight for the ceremony, tungsten in the hall, and a flash pointed at your face all evening. That means real skin preparation first, long-wear base, cream products under powder where the day will be hot, and a lip that survives a glass of wine and a hundred hugs.

The trial covers coverage level, how much definition you want on the eye, whether lashes are individual or a strip or nothing at all, and how far from your everyday face you actually want to travel. Most brides ask for more than they end up wanting, which is exactly what a trial is for. Tell us about sensitive skin, contact lenses or anything you have reacted to, and bring your own lipstick shade if you have a favourite so we can match it.

We finish with a small touch-up kit for the day — your lip colour, blotting paper and a powder — and we photograph the finished trial from three angles so the day-of look is a repeat, not an interpretation.

Wedding party styling

The wedding party is the part that goes wrong at other salons, and it is almost always a timing problem rather than a talent one. With five specialists we can run hair and makeup in parallel, so a party of eight is a morning rather than a day. Send us the ceremony time and the photographer's arrival time and we will build the schedule backwards from there and tell you what time the first person needs to be in a chair.

We style bridesmaids, the maid of honour, mothers of the bride and groom, flower girls and anyone else in the photos. Bridesmaids do not usually need individual trials, but one group trial is worth doing if the party is large or if you want them all in a matching style — and mothers of the bride nearly always do want their own, because that look has to last as long as yours.

The same room does quinceañeras, sweet sixteens and prom. Those are booked three to four weeks ahead, and we are happy to have the parent and the teenager disagree about the eyeliner in front of us; it is easier to settle at the trial than on the day.

More on this in the journal: the bridal hair and makeup timeline.

Book a bridal trial

Message us with your wedding date, the ceremony time, how many people need hair and how many need makeup, and we will come back with availability, a schedule and a price for the party. Dates in May, June, September and October go first — if yours is in one of those, book the trial as soon as you have the venue.

WhatsApp is the fastest way to reach us and usually answered the same day. You can also call (862) 466-2119 during open hours, Monday to Saturday, 9 AM to 5 PM. We are at 59 Wilson Avenue, Newark, NJ 07105.
